JS Online: Summerfest shakes, stirs things up:

Summerfest shakes, stirs things up

Gentrifying festival will add a martini lounge this year

It began as an Everyman festival, a muddy musical gathering with beer, beer, beer. And more beer. But as it approaches middle-age, Summerfest wants what a lot of middle-agers want: a cool martini.

And so Summerfest, heading into its 38th season, is making room for a new drinking vessel: the up-glass.

Plans for the new Jo Jo's Martini Lounge and Miller Lite in the former Hyundai Big Easy Club adjacent to the Marcus Amphitheater were unveiled Friday by Summerfest officials, who emphasized that it was a 'test program' that will be watched closely.

'We're going in taking precautions,' said John Boler, director of marketing for Summerfest. 'The festival is not about over-consumption.'

To those skeptical about that, he pointed to a special security plan drawn up for the martini lounge, where the cocktails will go for $10.

Everyone entering must be 21, and everyone must produce an ID proving that before being allowed in, Boler said. Wristbands will be issued showing that patrons are old enough to be served. Once in, patrons may be denied alcohol if it's believed they've over-indulged, he said.
